How do I get my Cattleya orchid to regrow its roots? I have a small Cattleya that I left out on my balcony for too long. I live in southern California, but it was especially cold this year. I brought it in a couple of weaks ago and noticed that its roots have died. The leaves are still green and firm. Will the roots regrow when it gets warmer? Is there anything I can do to encourage root growth? What about watering?
What is the best planting medium, or food, or moss for cattleya orchids? I am trying to grow a cattleya orchid, but I don't know a lot about them. I have been all over the internet, but they all say different things. I know that they have a special pot, and that the roots should dry between waterings. But does anyone know which plant food and medium are the best? I have saw sites that say to use coconut bark, charcoal chunks... And fertilizers... Ugh! 11-35-15, or 20-14-13... Help! I have a cattleya on the way and I already have a happy phalaenopsis (unless anyone knows a fertilizer I should feed him. :) ) Help! I already have a planting medium that is supposed to be made for phal's. Could I use that for the Cattleya? I love the cattleyas, and I want it to grow and be healthy. Any tips? Thank you!!!
What do cattleya orchids smell like? A friend of mine who makes perfumes recently made a floral perfume with orchid notes, and she said that the scent was that of a cattleya orchid; she called it a purple orchid. I've never smelled a real cattleya orchid before, but the smell of this perfume is fresh, brisk, floral, green and sweet. Would this be the smell of an actual orchid of this variety?
When do I repot my Cattleya Orchid? I'm a newbie to the wonderful world of Orchids and recently, I purchased a small Cattleya from a local flower store. It was not in bloom and was packaged in netting hanging from a peg on a display stand. The leaves are making it very top heavy and it will not stand upright in the plastic pot that it was packaged with. My question is, do I try to stand the pot up somehow or does it sound like it is ready for a new pot?
What is the meaning of the name Cattleya? I've looked on every website I could think of and I even tried googling this name. I've heard the name used before so I know it's a real name. I think it sounds really pretty and want to use it in my story, but I want to know what it means first, or it origin or something. So does anyone know what the name Cattleya means?
How to deal with Cattleya Orchids.? I bought a minature cattleya orchid (it's bright orange) from BB Barns in Asheville,NC in May 2004. It's now in Greenille,NC. When I bought it it was in full bloom and gorgeous. At first it just put out lots of new leaves and pseudobulbs but no new flowers. It then got severely dehydrated when I went on vacation and the person who was suppossed to water my plants forgot. Most of the leaves are kind of shrivelled and yellowish green rather than dark green. I've got it potted in sphagum moss and make sure it is kept moist and fetilize with Better Grow Orchid Plus and Better Grow Bloom Boost but it still looks like it is dying although I do have some new growth. I have been keeping it in a west facing window except in summer when it moves to a south facing window. I also have three other cattleyas bought more recently whose leaves are turning slightly yellow-green and some of the bottom ones have died. What can I do to bring it back to its former glory?

What is a Cattleya? My aunt was talking about a Cattleya the other day and I was just wondering what it was. I'm assuming from her conversation that it's some kind of plant. Any information?

Cattleya care? Okay, we have many cattleyas in our garden planted in pots. I was wondering how you make them to stay erect? The cattleyas we have always sags. Even if we put a stick on it to make it stay erect, it still won't budge. It just goes the other way. Also, there's a really thick, hard wall behind the pots (since they are kind a "fixed" wall pots) so tying them to the wall to stay erect is not an option. Please help!!
Where can I find Information on specific orchid names and attributes? I'm looking to find out info on a skinerii Cattleya and other orchids of costa rica. Any Ideas? Fragrance, color, how rare or plentiful, local distributers/growers... Like this kinda info. If ya know or just think ya know plz drop me a line at Sobezander@yahoo.com Hey, Thanks.
Does anyone have a home remedy to cure a bacterial problem with orchids? One of my favorite cattleya orchids has been losing leaves left and right since it got infected- probably because I overwatered it late in the fall. Leaves turn black and then drop off. I don't know what to do other than apply some topical treatments I found in my plant supplies. I stopped watering almost completely and that has helped some
My Cattleya leaves turn reddish purple in colour..... is it too much sun or it it ok? I have just shifted my cattleya from a very shady place to a more sunny place (but still no direct sun).... the colour of the leaves turn a little reddish purple... it is ok or is the sun too much.....anyway, what is the best condition for Cattleyas, fertilization, watering, sunlight and media to plant... my cattleya produced new bulbs but seems unable to sustain flower from them
Whats the national flower of Costa Rica? I'm trying to find out which purple orchid is the national flower of Costa Rica. I found out that the scientific name is Cattleya Skinneri, but when i searched that online, I found many different types of orchids.
Orchid Basic Care? I have purchased many orchids plants and killed them. After more than 3 dozens or so (I lost count) in 5 years, I finally was able to get 2 of my orchids still alive, it's been more than 6 months. One is oncidium, the other is dendrobium. I've been placing them in the bathroom window above the shower after the blooms fell. The oncidium has spiked again (yipee). The dendrobium looks okay, but I cut off the flower stems after the blooms fell months ago. Is this okay? I'm also purchasing several other orchids (1 vanda, 1 phal, 1 cymbidium and 1 cattleya). Can any of them be planted outside? Also, any tips on how to cut off the stems after blooms for each species are appreciated. For fertilizing, I read that I should fertilize every 10 days to 2 weeks. How long do I have to do this and when? Is it all year long? Is the fertilizing method the same for all orchid species? When's blooming season for each species? What type of orchid media should I use? Thank you much for the tips.

What am I doing wrong?? Orchid Care? Back in December I bought two orchids from a wholefoods market, a big beautiful Cattleya overflowing with soft pink and white flowers and a Phalaenopsis with hot pink flowers. Lets just say that as of right now, 8 months after I brought them home, they aren’t doing so well… As a side note here is a little background story on the first few months of their lives with me. I still live at home with my parents and thus have no say in matters of house keeping, such as use of the thermostat. Well back in the winter months my frugal mother (lets just say it, cheep!) refused to heat the house any higher than 65 degrees. Really the temp. in the house was usually somewhere in between 60-63 degrees. If I felt like I was cold I know these tropical plants must have been freezing! Within just a week or so all of the flowers on both plants started to fall off. I don’t know anything about orchid care really but I think that this really must have shocked these plants so bad that they have yet to recover. Within a few more weeks of the flowers falling off the Phalaenopsis started to lose its leaves one by one. Each leaf would start to turn yellow at the base and within a few days the entire leaf would be brown/yellow and with a slight tug would easily off. Soon all I had was a spike in some potting mix. Needless to say, I figured it was completely dead, tossed it, and went out and got another to try again. The new one I have has done very well all summer and has just started to lose its flowers which I know is fine. What has me worried is that the same thing is starting to happen to the leaves!!! So far it has only lost one but I fear it will lose more. What should I do? Also, one of the spikes is turning brown one the top two inches. Should I cut the whole spike off or just the brown part. As for the Cattleya, it has not die on me…yet. Not for lack of abuse; I am now aware I have unknowingly have cause it severe trauma. Not only did the poor thing suffer a winter long freeze, I also cut both the spikes away as soon as the flowers dropped and repotted it when spring came. Ever since the warm summer weather hit it has seemed to be doing fine though. But it too has started to lose its leaves. So far two, and counting. About two months ago it lost two leaves over the course of a week and then it stopped. What prompted me to finally find help was I noticed yesterday another leaf had a hint of yellow tint to it. Today I can see that this leaf too, is doomed. Oh, and one other thing. The Cattleya is plagued by teeny, tiny little flies that seem to call it home. They aren’t common fruit flies, they are much smaller. They don’t seem to be causing it any harm, there are no holes in the leaves or anything like that; they just gross me out. And they are a new problem. They have only been around for a few weeks; the plant started losing its leaves long before they showed up. One last thing, the Phalaenopsis is only about a foot away from the Cattleya and yet the flies never go over to that one. Why?? I haven’t done anything different. I water them both about once a week. They both get a lot of indirect sunlight. What am I doing wrong??? What can I do to make them both healthy again and flower one day?

Unknown Orchid, HELP!!!? I found the most amazing orchid but i don't know the name, I just have a picture : http://s105.photobucket.com/albums/m223/... if someone could tell me the full name that would be great I just know it's a cattleya hybrid please help!!!
How many roots does an orchid need to survive? I've recently started growing orchids (phals, paphs, cattleyas, dendrobiums and vandas), and I ordered two beautiful orchids from an excellent seller on eBay (past experiences have been great), but was upset to find that all but one of the roots were rotten on both plants. They're both phalaeonopsis. I trimmed all the dead, rotten roots away, but now there's just one healthy one left, and the leaves are looking soft and droopy from lack of support. What can I do to save my orchids?! Is there anything I can put on the roots or the bark to stimulate or expedite new root growth? I'm too new to orchids to know this yet...but they're beautiful plants and I don't want them to die! My favorite one is in spike right now, so I haven't even seen it bloom yet! =(

A flower to describe a characters personality? i'm writin a novel and i want it to based upon flowers and how they r like a human being....well, i want that to be a secret message or a little message behind the real story...but anyway....i was trying to find a flower that matched my charaters....at least my main one named alana...she is very mature for her age(16)(may change to 13 or 14)...and she is a neat freak, she doesn't hang out much( she has 1 friend because she feels like since this friend knows her well she doesn't need anyother friend), she doesn't like to cause her parents trouble or make them feel diappointed in her, and she has a way of making others feel comfortable around her even if they want to feel intimidated so that they can hate her. I choose an orchid( cattleya) , which means mature charm in flower language, at 1st to represent her but idk if dats the best flower to descibe her. Is that the best flower for her??/...If not can u please tell me of a flower thats fits this character and the meaning of the flower in flower language??? these are also other characters that i want flowers for: Emoni- a very quiet and shy person. She hangs around Alana a lot, Alana being sorta like her protecter. She is still able to stand up for herself even wen Alana not there, especially if you make her mad. She just got used to Alana always stepping in and thinks that it makes Alana happy to defend her, which it does. Nick ( name may change to justin)- he is rude and arrogant, especially to Alana, but nice around guest and people who look up to him. Alana knows he is just hiding behind a mask and have seen wat he's really like, which is rude and selfish and arogant of course. I have more characters but i'll jus stick to these for now....thanx....peace luv , and chicken grease.... - Seth's lover....n future wife.....n future baby mama....n ultimate soulmate i like the iris idea for emoni...really nice...n if nick is a rose which kind would he be( like which color rose)....thanx guys...keep the ideas rollin in...!! oo....n another character i want a flower for : Marcos- stubborn, always bugging Alana( he's trying to win her back after he cheated on her), persistent, doesn't give up easily, and gaudy( not in the , he dressess badly way or he likes to show off his looks...more in the way of him actin like he has the ability to charm his way out of situations...not in a narcisstic way either)( nick is more like a narcissist)
